State Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin (R-District 43) Represented Alabama at the National Gathering of State Legislators

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Representative Mary Sue McClurkin recently represented at the American Legislative Exchange Council's (ALEC) Tax and Fiscal Policy Task Force's annual Tax Academy in Washington, D.C., on December 3, 2008.

An elite group of 60 state legislators from across the United States gathered for a day of intense discussions on critical fiscal policy issues facing the states and nation. Attendees met with nationally-renowned policy experts, including: Dr. Bob McTeer, former president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas; Stephen Moore, senior economics writer at the Wall Street Journal ; and Dr. Richard Vedder, professor of economics at The Ohio University.

"A good tax system requires informed taxpayers who understand how taxes are assessed, collected, and complied with. It should be clear to taxpayers who and what is being taxed, and how tax burdens affect them and the economy. The tax system should be as simple as possible, and should minimize gratuitous complexity. The cost of tax compliance is a real cost to society.” said State Representative Mary Sue McClurkin.

“ALEC is dedicated to providing innovative solutions for lawmakers to solve today's budget problems – without increasing taxes,” said Jonathan Williams, ALEC's Director of Tax and Fiscal Policy. He further contended, “If families and businesses are required to live within their means, government should be required to as well.”
